Pépin accepting the 2009 Pinnacle Award
|
Jacques Pépin, the great French chef and author, was honored by The Preservation Society of Newport County at “A Vintage Evening at The Breakers,” attended by vintners, committee members, executives of American Public Television, and Newport lovers of the Nectar of the Gods (a.k.a. oenophiles). The Friday evening event officially opened the highly anticipated 2009 Wine & Food Festival.

The weekend-long event at Marble House featured Saturday and Sunday demonstrations by leading chefs, cookbook and wine book signings, and tastings prepared by area restaurants to go with the samplings of superb wines from fine wineries.
Pépin, of “More Fast Food My Way” on America Public Television and author many cookbooks, was presented with the 2009 Pinnacle Award by Preservation Society CEO Trudy Coxe, while Gloria Pépin applauded. Thirty years ago, he began his TV career with “Jacques Pépin’s Kitchen,” and went on to “Julia & Jacques’s Cooking at Home,” with Julia Child, and other programming. The droll and ebullient chef, who has won the Legion d’Honneur and cooked for Charles de Gaulle, Itzhak Perlman, and President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy, spoke with Peter Herman, President of IMA, who told Newport Seen it was the fifth year he had been coming to the Wine and Food Festival, and it was “most entertaining, full of people who connect, share interests, camaraderie, and a passion for wine.”

Mr. Pepin accepted the Tiffany Cup, and promptly donned it as a chef’s hat.
An auction of fine wines, along with pairings of wines with spectacular travel, catered dinners, cruises, and art was presided over by guest auctioneer George McNeely of Christies.
Other celebrated chefs who gave Saturday and Sunday demonstrations at the packed tents at Marble House included Roseann Tully of Intermezzo Magazine, Andrew Shotts of Garrison Confections, Inc, Mike Hervieux of The Bay Voyage, Kevin Thiele of One Bellevue at the Hotel Viking, Joanne Weir, of Joanne Weir's Cooking Class, Annie Copps of Yankee Magazine, David Burke of Prime at Foxwoods & Townhouse New York, Walter Potenza of Walter's Ristorante d'Italia, and Kyle Ketchum of The Spiced Pear at the Chanler.
The demonstrations were lively and fully subscribed, and samples of the dishes were served, along with the proper wines, of course. A jazz brunch was held on Sunday, with music by Mac Chrupcala’s orchestra, and booksignings went on in the Museum store.
