His Serene Highness Prince Alois of Liechtenstein flew through the rising clouds of volcanic ash enveloping northern Europe to honor his long association with the Pell Family of Newport.
“I was afraid I wouldn’t make it,” he said from the lectern.
At an elegant reception and luncheon at the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy on the campus of Salve Regina University, the debonair Prince spoke about Liechtenstein’s role in the global economy, and likened his small country to Rhode Island, with a not-dissimilar population to that of Newport.

He remarked on the close association with the Pell family, lauding the Pell Center for its championing of the humanities, art and education.

Although Liechtenstein is participating the the EU markets, it has no natural resources, and faces challenges in the financial sector. The country is distinguished from othere in its comprehensive solution to tax evasion, offiering a high level of privacy.
Questions were asked about Parliamentary procedure and the political system, and the role of the reigning Prince, to which H.S.H. Prince Alois answered that he must consent to Parliamentary proposals., He also commented on the Greek debt crisis, and his country’s efforts to invest in the well-being of the youngest citizens.
