"Ascension of Style" at Providence Style Week

StyleWeek Providence founder Roseanna Ortiz Sinel &

her assistant Mariah Malinguaggio

Paris, New York, Milan, and... Providence?   Every now and then, Newport Seen likes to venture off-island and see what kinds of fun scenes our friends in Providence are concocting. When we received the invitation to "The Ascension of Style" at the RISD Museum, we were counting on it to be fashionable and creative -- we were not disappointed!

StyleWeek Providence celebrated its second birthday by hosting a tres chic fundraising evening in the RISD Museum's stately Grand Gallery on the 5th floor. It was the perfect backdrop to a small array of dramatically styled mannequins; near the entrance stood three Marie Antoinettes in bushy white curls and dramatic period-style gowns, their thoughts appearing in bubbles near their motionless mouths: "Let them eat cake." "I have seen all, I have heard all, I have forgotten all."

Inside the gallery, towering walls bursting with beautiful old paintings led up to a windowed atrium. Incredible outfits called out to be photographed from every corner and table, but we were on a mission to catch up with our friend Roseanna Ortiz Sinel, the beautiful powerhouse founder of StyleWeek Providence. Her assistant, Mariah Malinquaggio, led the way in an incredible feathered creation designed by RI native Jonathan Joseph Peters of Project Runway fame (season 7).
Rosie was in great spirits, celebrating the success of StyleWeek and her pride in the cause chosen for the event to benefit: the Gabrielle Dinsmore Heart & Hope fund, which assists children and families impacted by pediatric heart disease and congenital heart defects. We caught up with Louise Dinsmore and her husband Jeff, as well as a few of the smiling children (or "survivors") who have been helped by the organization.

We learned from Jonathan that the decor concept for the event was "the four seasons," and that the groups of mannequins were dressed to capture and evoke them. Many other fashion designers were involved in or attended the event, including Maria Del Carmen Mercado, Kara Wickman, special guest designers Hope Macdonald and Zev Isaiah, and Andrea Valentini.
The silent auction was plush, featuring gift cards to Providence hottest restaurants and boutques, custom-made accessories, catered parties, spa days, travel vouchers, swag bags, and more. Guests received a complimentary lemon drop drink with their ticket, and munched on egg rolls, coconut shrimp, teriyaki chicken skewers, and pita chips with hummus and tabouleh. The party really revved up when the fun, jazzy band Miss Wensday took the stage with her band The Cotillions, expertly setting old torch songs ablaze with her Liza Minelli-esque voice.

All in all the night appeared to be a huge success, and we have to admit that our favorite piece were handbag designer Kent Stetson's incredible USA-shaped sunglasses (atop a Union Jack shirt, no less!).
