Carcieri's Last Governor's Ball Dazzles at Ochre Court

The Carcieris share the first dance

Guests came from all corners of the Ocean State for 2010’s Governor’s Ball, held annually at Salve Regina University’s magnificent Ochre Court mansion. The event, in its 34th year, is one of the most elegantly festive affairs of Newport’s holiday season, made bittersweet this year as the final Governor’s Ball held in honor of Donald Carcieri, who is resigning as state governor in 2011 and will be succeeded by Lincoln Chafee.

Event Chairs Jan and Joe Nagle graciously greeted newcomers in a receiving line which included Carcieri and his wife, Sue, Salve Regina University President Jane Gerety, and Barbara and Joe Distefano. Partygoers included Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Louis Fazzano, Constance Evrard, Tom and Mary Gilbane, and Art and Paula Deblois. Newport Seen also caught up with ABC 10 News Anchor Frank Colletta, who shared that he sometimes peruses the pages of our site. We also spotted Michael Semenza, Salve’s Vice President of University Relations & Advancement, chatting with Robin Carreiro in front of a gorgeous Christmas tree.

Newport Seen enjoys the Governor’s Ball not just for its luxurious, antique setting, but also for the chic, fashionable array of gowns worn by its female attendees. Of course, some men were inspired to go above and beyond the traditional black tie dress code; we found at least one kilt, jauntily sported by Erik Aldrich.

The upstairs balcony is one of the most unique and appealing aspects of Ochre Court as a venue; from small tables arranged by ornate wooden banisters, guests could rest their feet and observe the dancing below, which was quite spirited thanks to the upbeat musical stylings of Brass Attack.

Salve student volunteers were on hand to help with coat check and hand out little party favors at the end of the night, lending a cheery, youthful presence to the night.
