Live From Newport…….It’s Saturday Night!

The ballroom darkened, the music came up, and on the screen, the raucous saxophone that plays the "Saturday Night Live" theme song began.

Then the video of Newport’s own stars: Bobbie Carpenter, Pamela Fielder, Anne Hamilton, Carol and Les Ballard, Brian McKenna, Kara Malkovich-Acerra, et alia, came up. The verisimilitude to the opening sequence of the popular late night show was startling. In fact, it was so good, they ran it twice, by uproarious popular demand.

The great party that benefited the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County had begun, and The Blues Brothers, Coneheads, a Roseanne Rosanna-Danna, and other characters from the popular Saturday night show roamed the halls and rooms of Rosecliff.

The most original costume was one of Tina Fey impersonating Sarah Palin, hilariously balancing a baby and a rifle, worn by Dale Mercer. Leith Adams, known around town for her hats, wore her best head ornament yet. Co-Chair Kara Malkovich-Acerra dashed around as one (or the other) Blues Brother, Co-chair Brian McKenna saw that everyone was happy and taken care of, and Mrs. Nicholas Brown referred to herself as “Madame X”. Conehead David Thalmann spoke with Bettie Pardee, and the strains of the Bob Hardwick Orchestra lured people onto the dance floor. A particularly cheerful table was hosted by Tony Cavanagh and Patti Mascali.

There was the obligatory silent auction on the terrace, but the serious fun came in the parade of costumes, with prizese. The live auction featured fantastic getaways.

The evening was one of outrageous fun, and inspired play, and raised $90,000 for the agency. The Boys & Girls Clubs' mission is to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens through a full range of programs concentrating on ages 5 though 18.
