MMM..Marilyn "Channeled" at newportFILM Spring Fundraiser

Designated "self-serve coat rack"

NewportFILM’s spirited spring fundraiser party, a tribute to the legendary Marilyn Monroe, was a glamorous Hollywood romp of an evening, attracting the young and fabulous of Newport and beyond. The event took place a Christie’s, and had to be postponed two weeks from its originally scheduled date due to an unrelenting winter storm the first weekend. This has been a worse-than-usual winter for New England; will our beloved summer please return ASAP?

Officially billed as a “Winter Friend-Raiser,” For the Love of Film… It’s Marilyn’s Hollywood! marked the second annual winter event for the young not-for-profit organization. Themed attire was encouraged but not required; thankfully, most NewportFILM patrons were more than happy to dress up! There was a smattering of Marilyn lookalikes (or, perhaps, Madonna lookalikes, as one guest pointed out; the Material Girl is perhaps the quintessential Monroe copycat, introducing an entire new generation to Marilyn’s iconic style), as well as a would-be Kennedy or two, and many who were simply dashing, dapper, and dazzling.

Many silent auction items were also appropriately themed; one of the top-selling options was a Steve McQueen-inspired Barbour jacket donated by Royal Male of Newport, complete with American flag insignia and lining. Others included hotel and show packages in New York City, tickets to the International Hall of Fame Quarterfinals, a private dinner for eight from Garnish Kitchen, photography by Victoria Mele and Caterine Milinaire, a painting by Diana Bunting of the Point in Newport, and also paintings by Isabelle Lirakis and Libby Gilpatric. “Bling” jewelry, spa packages and gym memberships, and designer clothes and handbags inspired enthusiastic bidding.

There was a full bar as well as a station offering special themed Svedka vodka cocktails. Among the hors d’oeuvres being passed were some truly exquisite (and very generously sized) mini lobster rolls. We enjoyed catching up with NewportFILM Executive Director Terri Connors, looking resplendent in purple, as well as co-founder/artistic director Andrea van Beuren. Genevieve Rozansky was to thank for the whimsical decorations (she hand sewed the pillows and curtains!) and looked smashing in a dress right out of that infamous scene from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (brunettes, in this case!).

The party moved upstairs as the night went on, with a red-carpet style photo stop, a DJ spinning dance beats, and the ever-popular flip book booth, where guests grabbed props and funny hats and costumes and pantomimed in front of the camera, receiving a personalized flip book at the end! We were having so much fun, we didn’t want to leave!

NewportFILM’s mission is “to nurture discovery, creative achievement and community dialogue through the art of film. Serving and celebrating both the film artists and the audiences who view their work, we seek to expand on Newport's proud history of culture and artistic patronage by bringing new and timeless voices in film to the Rhode Island community.” Right around the time of the event, NewportFILM was showing "Love, Marilyn" as its featured film. We anticipate many more exciting premieres to come from this vibrant young organization!
