Newport Flower Show, “Fete des Fleurs" a Garden of Earthly Delights

Sculptures by Donald Gerola

Gallic Pleasures were everywhere, as the Newport Flower Show was a lá Francaise", from its exquisitely manicured floral displays, to its booths, to its music.  The front gardens, the “parterre “ of  its title of “Paintings and Parterres”, was modeled on the fountain at the Centre Georges Pompidou of Paris, and featured metal sculptures by Rhode Island artist Donald Gerola. The Preservation Society of Newport had created another exquisitely memorable event.

Fashion icon Iris Apfel hosted an afternoon tea before the opening night, and long-time sponsor Bartlett tree, brought along Marie Antoinette, who greeted partygoers.

Beautiful flower arrangements

A Luncheon and Lecture was given by Eric T. Haskell, professor of French Studies at Scripps College in California, who spoke on the history of French formal gardens in his talk “Lasting Landscapes”, relating them to party settings, particularly relevant to Newport’s gorgeous landscapes.  Jeff Leatham, called the “rock star” of the floral world, artistic director of the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, spoke on floral design.

But opening night was a sheer celebration of flowers, their uses and designers.  Patricia Fernandez, Chair of the event, welcomed the guests, and Trudy Coxe, Monty Burnham and Robert Bartlett of Bartlett Tree were on hand to thank guests for attending the unique evening party.

The vendors were plentiful, unique and fascinating, and the only thing missing this year was the children’s tent.

A private dinner for sponsors was held in a tent on the “parterre," while on the grounds, delicious passed hors d’oeuvres and French food stations abounded. Inside Rosecliff were lovely designs and floral sculptures, already given their prizes and sporting their ribbons.
