Newport Seen Wins! Likened to an online "Town & Country"
Editor's note: Newport Seen has just won two additional national awards for best website and best online writing from the National League of Press Women!
Newport Seen brought it home!
In a recent awards ceremony at the Oak Hills Country Club's Quattro Pazzi restaurant in Connecticut www.NewportSeen.com was cited as Best Online Web Development/Creation of the year, and for Best Online Writing of the year, by the Connecticut Press Club.
Principals Linda Phillips. President of Phillips Communications, and Thomas Roskelly, Creative Director of Roskelly, Inc. were praised for fulfilling the site’s stated purpose, a “Social, Cultural, and Philanthropic Diary of America’s First Resort.”
The competition was judged by members of the Delaware Press Club. Judge Kye Parsons commented “this website is the place to go. Clearly, it’s intended for an upscale audience and the graphics and fonts (designed by Mr. Roskelly) have a sophisticated look. It reminds me of an online version of "Town & Country Magazine.”

Author and photojournalist Linda Phillips was cited for her breaking news article on Raptorex, the newest fossil discovery, which beat The New York Times and NPR with its online news coverage. Said judge Parsons: “Informative, with interesting photos and appropriate captions. The paragraphs are short and to the point.” Ms. Phillips also won a first place criticism award for her classical music review column in the Greenwich, Connecticut Citizen newspaper.
Winner of the Mark Twain award was Donald Margulies, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and current Tony nominee. A wrenching scene from his play, " Collected Stories", was given at the banquet.
Randye Kaye served as awards emcee, and Dale Salm, managing editor of Connecticut Magazine, handed out the awards. Judith Marks-White, a New York Times contributor, won, as did playwright Barbara Smith, and Connecticut Channel 12 news anchor Tom Appleby.
www.NewportSeen.com was launched in June of 2009 in response to the shrinking print media’s coverage of its focus categories, and quickly spiraled in international readership. It now has nearly 300,000 page views in 105 countries, and is regularly read in London, Paris, Buenos Aires, Sydney, and other international capitals, as well as in all 50 states. Ninety percent of its readership is located in the southern New England area, focused in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York and serving its local, regional, and international advertisers.
The Connecticut Press Club, a sub-chapter of the National Federation of Press Women, is a dynamic organization for writers, authors, and journalists. As first place winners, Newport Seen has been automatically entered in the national competition of the NFPW. Roskelly and Phillips state, “we are so honored to be recognized for the realization of our initial goal in filling a missing niche in today’s changing media stream.”
