"Play for Pink" at Carnegie Abbey Club Benefits Newport Hospital

Fore! It was Ladies Day at the Carnegie Abbey Club near Newport, as play began at the magnificent Donald Steel- designed course in a charity tournament called "Play for Pink". Over 40 entrants in the golf tournament ( no tennis buffs entered) were treated to a sunset cocktail party in the "Tennis Cottage" at the spectacular new  Newport Beach Club the evening before play, and a Clubhouse luncheon at the Carnegie Abbey Club after the 18-hole competition. That, and a silent auction at the luncheon, raised needed funds for Newport Hospital.

Senior Assistant golf professional Peter O'Neill played announcer at the luncheon, urging the golf teams to bid on silent auction items, which included lessons with the pros, dining at Newport's Bouchard Restaurant, and—the most popular item – a day with bartender Steve Healy, culminating in his serving a party in one's own home, which had to be sold twice -- for an astonishing sum. Foursomes included Peggy Nolan, Karla Burke, Jackie Spicola and Selapina Rhee, who took first gross, and Liz Gett, Fran Gallagher, Betsey Fitzgerald, and Melanie Henderson, who took second net.

Harriet Granoff led the winners, and her team took First Net. Mrs. Granoff, Lori Driscoll, Mary Kitzes and Mindy Wachtenheim accepted beautiful engraved glass pitchers from Mr. O'Neill and Head golf professional Dave Sarrasin, as had the other winners.

It was all played on a beautiful June day, with breathtaking views of Narragansett Bay and the striking  Tower at Carnegie Abbey.
