You’re Sensational (And It Was) at The Newport Art Museum

Yellow 1950's Cadillac

A vintage yellow Cadillac on the lawn set the tone for the "retro" evening.

In an homage to the 1950’s, the Newport Art Museum presented its annual dinner dance, this year entitled  “You’re Sensational”, under a large tent at the Newport Art Museum on July 11.

In attendance were Jana and Don Jagoe, she wearing a tres chic Bibi, the hat  famously worn  by Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice of England, and a 50’s style dress. Admiral Thomas Weschler and his wife Trina Weschler spoke with Johnny Stokes and Ruth Buchanan, Margo Grosvenor,  and distinguished painter Richard Grosvenor, and Michael and Mary Hayes. Acting Executive Director Elizabeth A. Goddard wore a  floor-length gown and stole.

Co Chairs Jerry and Diana Slocum, with Rod O’Hanley, greeted guests as they entered, and all dined on hors d’oeuvres, before the seated dinner.

The live auction,  led by auctioneer Charles Curtis, vice president for wine sales North America at Christie’s, generated over $34,000.  It featured a magnificent brooch, of 18 carat yellow gold, platinum diamond and sapphire, hand engraved by master artist Paul Lantuch, and donated by Three Golden Apples.  The brooch fetched $4,500, and a sculptural vessel, Apporto, created and donated by Toots Zynsky, sold for $13,000.

The other auctioned items included: a cocktail cruise on Palawan, a 75’ Ted Hood Transatlantic Racer Cruise, an oil painting by Newport’s own Richard Grosvenor, two floor side Celtics tickets in addition to two nights in the Taj Boston Garden View Suite, a chance to rename the Museum for a day with a champagne reception for 25 people (donated by Plantation Catering of Newport), and a watercolor painting of Fort Wetherill Cove by David Dewey.

Dancing went well into the night, and the evening raised $227,000 for the Museum's collections and operations.
